Research area & expertise:

As a political scientist I am interested in intersections between politics and popular culture, especially sport, and political aspects of popular representative claims.

Current reasearch interests & projects:

  • political theory,
  • sport and populism,
  • sport and racism,
  • football and migration,
  • football and masculinity
  • football history

I am also on the editorial board of the Austrian football magazine ‘ballesterer’.
With Barbara Liegl I have conducted a research project on migration in Austrian professional football between 1945 and 2008 for the Austrian Science Fund FWF (2006-2008).

With Jakob Rosenberg I have recently conducted a research project on the history of Rapid Vienna Football Club during the Nazi-years (1938-45). http://fairplay.vidc.org/forschung/migration/

In 2009-2010 I have coordinated a comparative report on ‘Racism and Ethnic Discrimination in Sport in the EU and preventive initiatives’, commissioned by the European Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA). The FRA’s comparative report on ‘Racism and Ethnic Discrimination in Sport in the EU and preventive initiatives’ (2010) can be downloaded here:

In 2008-09 I have done research on the fate of the Viennese Jewish Sports Club Hakoah’s inter-war football champions (with David Forster).
